| Anaheim Ducks – Disney Characters Come to Life
Made famous by the film that the team was based on, Disney's “The Mighty Ducks,” the Anaheim Ducks are an upstart addition to the National Hockey League and have quickly made quite a splash in the world of ice hockey. They have made the playoffs seven times in their fifteen years of existence, quite a feat for a new team. Winning the Stanley Cup in the 2006-2007 playoffs after defeating the Ottawa Senators, they seem poised to enjoy a continued success, making this team really one to watch in the world of hockey.
The team was formed in 1993 by the Walt Disney Company. They were originally named the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, which was changed after they were acquired by Henry and Susan Samueli in 2005 to the Anaheim Ducks. The original team was part of a Disney franchise that included the 1992 film “The Mighty Ducks” about a youth hockey team formed by a group of misfit children turning their luck around with a great deal of practice and dumb luck. The movie was extended into an animated series the very same year that the actual hockey team came into being.
The logo for the Anaheim Ducks is, unsurprisingly, a duck-shaped hockey mask. Their official colors used to be a pleasing blend of eggplant, jade green, light grey, and white, but after changing names they also changed colors and logo for an update in branding and image. The new colors are black, gold, white and orange. This gives more of a grown-up feel to the team, to showcase the seriousness with which they pursue their goals both on and off the rink, and the orange is meant to represent their home town area of Orange County in California. Their mascot remains the same, however, being a human-like duck by the name of “Wild Wing.”
An Anaheim Ducks game is never boring, with fans showing a strong devotion to their team. The zeal with which the team was first followed by Disney fans has now been replaced with that of serious followers of hockey. Having first been housed in the Anaheim Arena, they continue to play in their hometown in the newly renamed Howard Arena. For southern Californians, this is a team that brings a great source of home pride and a sense of excitement to the NHL. In upcoming seasons they are a hot tip to continue their winning streak and regain the Stanley Cup title.
